“I used to be a teacher in Cilento back when Italy was so poor that our government had to rent small country houses and turn them into temporary schools.”
“What was a moment that made you proud of being a teacher?”
“I had this one student whose parents where divorced because his mother had an affair with her brother-in-law. At that time this was such a huge scandal and everybody knew about it, so she had to leave town. When the time for the kid’s First Communion came, his mother was driving all the way back to our town to be there for him, but she was late and he started crying. As soon as I learned about it, I immediately went there, I hugged him and told him I was going to be there for his First Communion.”
